Home Modifications

What are home modifications?

Home modifications minimise the risk of falls and maximise participation in daily life activities. Modifying an unsupportive home environment will help the client maintain independence and their wellbeing.

Typical home modifications include:

bathroom handrails handheld shower

How can an occupational therapist help with home modifications?

I help clients adjust their living environment to their abilities. First, I assess the client and their home. This identifies which aspects of the home are hazardous or barriers to participation in daily life activities.

Then, in consultation with the client and carer, I develop and implement a home modification plan. For major modifications, I can organise an architect who specialises in this area to assist with the plan. Once the home modifications are installed, I train the client and carer to safely use them.

I often prescribe home modifications together with assistive technology.
